Play a Part in CTL

As a CTL volunteer, what would I  gain?

Many new and renewed friendships!  By contributing your skills, talents and your very valuable time to your Community Theatre, you will come to know a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.  “The show must go on!”-and it does because of the important part that you play in the production!  Like a very large family, we work together to develop your unique talents and to help you discover new ones!

 Who can volunteer at CTL?

Retirees, working adults, college students, teens; in fact, entire families are all a part of our volunteer effort.  CTL welcomes any responsible person with a few hours to give and an interest in bringing theatre to life.  Volunteer placements are carefully assigned.  We try to accommodate your schedule, day and evening, weekday and weekend.

 How can I volunteer?

The first Wednesday in Feb, Mar, Apr, May, June, Sept, Oct, & Nov) at 7:00 pm is VOLUNTEER NIGHT at the Community Theatre in the heart of downtown Williamsport, located in the Trade and Transit Centre.  Interested persons will meet with the Director of Volunteers for an informational tour and indicate their areas of interest.  Otherwise, they may call or stop by the theatre business office.  Within a short time, you will be contacted to discuss the volunteer opportunities that await you!

What can a CTL volunteer do?

Volunteers serve in every capacity at the Community Theatre League because we are a volunteer-based organization.  Including the obvious actors and directors, there are many other jobs to be done to make each production successful.  Examples of a volunteer assignment include:

Daytime Box Office or Evening Performance Staff

Light and Sound Technician

Set Design, Construction,

Painting, and Dressing

Props Gatherer, Runner

Costume Seamstress or Wardrobe Staff

Committee Member

Daytime Box Office/Evening Performance Staff

Ticket reservations are made via a Daytime Box Office volunteer.  They answer phones, make reservations, and print tickets.  A knowledge of computers is helpful but not necessary.   The box office is open weekdays from 11-4 and staff schedules themselves weekly, bi-weekly, monthly...whichever they prefer.  Daytime staff often helps with copying, folding and various other office tasks.

Each Mainstage, concert, and SPROUTS production requires a Performance Staff for each performance.  CTL has in upwards of 75 performances a season and 6-10 volunteers are needed each night.  They hand out programs, take tickets, man the "will call" table, show people to their seats, sell concessions, and more.

Light and Sound Technician

Click here for the light and sound tech homepage!

Light and sound people range in age from 10-90.  CTL's modern light board makes lighting the stage a breeze.  If you can push a "go" button, you can be a Light Technician.  People with a more advanced knowledge (or interest) in lighting can volunteer for Light Design.

Sound Technicians cue microphones, sound effects CD's, music--whatever is needed for a particular show.  A little knowledge of sound design is helpful, but anyone can learn!

Set Design, Construction, Painting, and Dressing

The set is likely one of the largest undertakings in any production.  Designing, building, painting, and dressing the set requires many man hours and several volunteers.  If you've ever held a screw gun, paint roller or flower arrangement, you could help in any of these areas.

Props Gathering and Running

If you frequent yard sales and flea markets, and enjoy a great scavenger hunt, then try Props Gathering.  Many items need to be collected for any given show (items that an actor brings onstage are called "props").  This position is great for someone who perhaps can't commit to being available during the actual run of a show, but would like to help out in their free time.

Props Runners are the people who work the performances of the show, getting items ready to go onstage and making sure everything is ready to go at the start of the show.  Shows often require a few runners each night, and volunteers can sign on to do as many as they are able.

Costume Seamstress and Wardrobe Staff

Many CTL productions require costumes "made from scratch," but many others merely require someone to "pull" costumes from our costume shop, or hunt them down at yard sales or stores.  If you enjoy sewing and creating (or shopping!), being a Costume Seamstress might be the thing for you.

If you like being in the heart of the action, working on the wardrobe staff is a great way to jump right in.  Each performance requires a few people to help with quick costume changes, or to fix small costume problems that might pop up.  If you can commit to the full run, that is great, if not, you can sign up to work a few performances--whichever works best for you.

Committee Member

CTL has a vibrant Board of Directors and several committees who determine the direction of the organization, schedule appreciation events, fundraise, and a slew of other monumental tasks.  If you have an interest in grant writing, fundraising, volunteer appreciation, marketing, or planning, there might just be a committee for you.
